INEC Raises Alarm Over Threats to February Re-Runs and Bye-Elections

In a concerning development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised the alarm about a possible plot to disrupt the upcoming re-run and bye-elections scheduled for February 3rd, 2024, across various Nigerian states. The revelation was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a recent meeting of the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

INEC’s Concerns

Professor Yakubu highlighted “rising insecurity in some states” and expressed unease over “incendiary statements by some political actors.” He emphasized that these factors, coupled with potential acts of “thuggery” in crucial polling units, could pose a significant threat to the integrity of the elections. The vulnerability of areas concentrated with re-runs was specifically underscored, with a single disrupted polling unit having the potential to impact the entire electoral outcome.

Unveiling the Plot

While specific details of the alleged plot remain undisclosed, INEC called on security agencies to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding electoral materials and personnel. The commission also stressed the importance of increased collaboration with various stakeholders, including political parties, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations, to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
