Iyabo Ojo Shares How Bimbo Akintola Helped Launch Her Acting Career

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has opened up about her journey into the Nigerian film industry, giving heartfelt credit to her senior colleague, Bimbo Akintola, for playing a pivotal role in her breakthrough. In a recent appearance on the Glass House show hosted by comedian Ayo Makun, Ojo shared how Akintola’s guidance and encouragement set her on the path to success in Nollywood.

Recounting her early days, Ojo revealed that her passion for entertainment started during her secondary school years. She was a vibrant and outgoing student, actively participating in various activities such as singing, rapping, acting, and debating. These early experiences ignited her love for the arts and laid the foundation for her career. “I’ve always wanted to be in entertainment,” she said, reminiscing about her days as a popular figure in school.

Her aspirations became more defined after watching Bimbo Akintola’s performance in the film Out of Bounds. That movie left a deep impression on her, solidifying her determination to pursue acting. “I just said this is what I want to do, this is who I want to be. That was it for me. That’s when I made up my mind,” Ojo explained.

Following her secondary school education, Ojo took the bold step of visiting Bimbo Akintola’s home. During her visit, she auditioned informally, and despite her inability to cry on command—a skill often required in emotional scenes—she managed to showcase her potential. Akintola was impressed and decided to mentor the young actress.

Under Akintola’s guidance, Ojo was introduced to veteran actor Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey and his wife, who played a crucial role in giving her a foothold in the industry. Ojo fondly recalled how Bassey handed her a note for an audition in Surulere, Lagos. That opportunity turned out to be the stepping stone she needed, as she landed her first acting role as a sub-lead in the 1998 movie Satanic.

The experience of working on set for the first time was a monumental moment for Ojo. She described the opportunity as a dream come true, expressing gratitude to Bimbo Akintola and Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey for believing in her. Their mentorship marked the beginning of what has become a successful acting career for Iyabo Ojo.
