Jaywon Celebrates Timeless Relevance of Classic Hit ‘This Year’ After Over a Decade

Nigerian singer Jaywon is celebrating the continued success and relevance of his 2013 hit single This Year (Odun Yi), which has remained a staple in Nigerian holiday celebrations for over a decade. The song, which has become a recurring anthem for the annual Detty December festivities, continues to captivate audiences, enjoying fresh commercial attention as 2024 transitions into 2025.

On January 1, Jaywon shared a new performance video of the track on his social media, proudly acknowledging its enduring impact. The singer took to social media to reflect on the song’s success, marking 13 years since its release. In response to some social media users who criticized the post, suggesting Jaywon was relying on his classic hit to regain relevance, he embraced the comparison to Mariah Carey’s iconic All I Want For Christmas, calling it a compliment. He expressed his gratitude, saying:

“A song that’s been playing strong for 13 years and you think your hate today will stop it? Call me the African Mariah Carey if you want; it doesn’t bother me. In fact, it’s a compliment. After over a decade, we’re still here, still loved, and still supported, and for that, I’m endlessly grateful to Jehovah and my amazing fans.”

This Year holds a special place in the hearts of many Nigerians, who often start the new year by enjoying its positive messages and uplifting melodies. The song’s continued popularity speaks to its lasting impact on the Nigerian music scene.

Music Executive and Talent Manager Korie Samuel weighed in on the song’s significance, noting that if the Nigerian music industry had better structures in place, Jaywon should be earning millions in royalties from the track annually. He shared his thoughts on X, saying:

“This is the closest thing we have to a holiday classic in Nigeria. But, unfortunately, Nigeria is happening to it. If we had any structure in Afrobeats, all Jaywon ought to be doing for the rest of his life is exercising, eating healthy, and praying to his creator for a long life.”
