Jessica Chastain Opens Up About Working with Anne Hathaway on ‘Mother’s Instinct
In her latest movie, “Mother’s Instinct,” Jessica Chastain delves into the complexities of working with her co-star Anne Hathaway, revealing some challenges they faced on set.
Set in Sixties suburbia, the psychological thriller follows two best friends and mothers, Alice and Celine, whose bond is tested after a tragic accident leads to paranoia and guilt.
Chastain, who previously collaborated with Hathaway on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” discussed their dynamic during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. She admitted that working with Hathaway was “difficult” due to their close friendship off-screen.
The actress expressed the challenge of portraying conflict between characters when there’s genuine affection between the actors. Despite their friendship, they had to perform scenes with enmity, which was emotionally taxing.
However, Hathaway reciprocated Chastain’s sentiments, praising her as “one of the greatest living actresses” and emphasizing their strong friendship. Chastain echoed this sentiment, commending Hathaway’s professionalism and ability to evoke deep emotions effortlessly.
Beyond their on-screen collaboration, both actresses are also producers on the film, showcasing their commitment to diverse and inclusive storytelling. While acknowledging some progress in the industry’s inclusivity, they remain cautious about celebrating too soon.
Chastain’s recent work, including her Academy Award-winning performance in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and her role in “Memory,” directed by Michel Franco, has earned critical acclaim for her ability to convey complex emotions with depth and authenticity.
“Mother’s Instinct” hits cinemas on 27th March, offering audiences a gripping exploration of friendship, motherhood, and the darker aspects of human nature.
