Kangaroo Named Grandi Killed in Shelling on Russian Zoo; 9,000 Children to Be Evacuated Amid Border Region Attacks

In a tragic incident, a kangaroo named Grandi was killed at a zoo in western Russia as a result of shelling, prompting the evacuation of 9,000 children from the border region amidst ongoing attacks.

The zoo located in Belgorod reported that Grandi was outside her enclosure when it was damaged by cluster fragments during Tuesday’s shelling. Russian officials confirmed the destruction of Ukraine-launched missiles and drones over Belgorod and neighboring regions, heightening tensions in the area.

Expressing profound grief and frustration, the Belgorod Zoo conveyed its devastation over Grandi’s death, emphasizing that none of its staff were harmed in the attack. Despite the perilous circumstances, the zoo affirmed its commitment to caring for its animals, recognizing their dependence on the staff’s dedication.

Grandi, a Bennett’s tree-kangaroo, had been a beloved resident of the zoo since her transfer from St Petersburg in 2019. Described as friendly, gentle, and fearless, Grandi endeared herself to visitors and caretakers alike, enjoying interactions and hand-feeding sessions.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine if Grandi was pregnant at the time of her demise, with the zoo expressing hope that her pouch was empty. Fondly remembered for her endearing qualities, the zoo pledged to honor Grandi’s memory by planting a grape tree, her favorite treat, in her honor once the current turmoil subsides.

As the situation in the border region remains volatile, Belgorod’s governor announced plans to evacuate 9,000 children due to continuous shelling by Ukraine. While Kyiv refrains from direct comments on strikes within Russian territory, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba attributed such actions to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, emphasizing the consequences of the Kremlin’s invasion.
