Kano Governor Urges Reopening of Nigeria’s Borders to Alleviate Food Scarcity”

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently consider reopening Nigeria’s borders for the importation of foodstuffs. The aim of this request is to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian masses who are currently facing food scarcity.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the appeal was made following a meeting between Governor Yusuf and the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the Government House in Kano.

Governor Yusuf expressed deep concern over the critical condition of hunger and starvation in the country, which has been exacerbated by the rising prices of commodities. He acknowledged President Tinubu’s intervention with the ongoing national food initiative, and he believes that Kano, as the host for the initiative, can help alleviate the effects of food scarcity if the program is implemented.

The Governor emphasized that reopening the borders and allowing free importation of commodities would provide an immediate intervention to make food available and affordable. He highlighted the hardships faced by the populace, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan, and stressed the urgent need to open the borders to alleviate their distress.

Governor Yusuf also commended the Customs’ initiative to distribute food items to the citizens of Kano, acknowledging the prevailing hardships and hunger experienced by many. He urged the Customs to ensure that this benevolent act reaches those who are most affected.

Furthermore, Governor Yusuf assured the Customs of his unwavering support in all aspects, particularly those that would yield positive outcomes for Kano and Nigeria as a whole.

During the meeting, CG Adeniyi reiterated the importance of strengthening the bond between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Kano community. He emphasized the Service’s commitment to collaboration and mutual understanding, pledging to implement policies aimed at refining business processes and fostering engagement with stakeholders.

CG Adeniyi also announced that the Customs Service had made comprehensive arrangements to address the current challenges of food scarcity and hardship in Kano. This includes distributing essential food items to the residents of the state.

The appeal by Governor Yusuf highlights the urgent need to address the food scarcity issue in Nigeria and calls for the reopening of the country’s borders to facilitate the importation of foodstuffs. The collaboration between the Kano State government and the Nigerian Customs Service aims to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian masses and ensure the availability and affordability of food in the region.
