Kano Women Bread Makers Protest Soaring Flour Prices, Urge Government Action
In Kano, women producers of local bread, known as Gurasa, took to the streets in a mass demonstration against the exorbitant cost of flour. They urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene. The protest, organized by the Women Gurasa Producers, aimed to draw attention to the pressing issue of soaring flour prices, which have severely impacted their livelihoods.
Calls for Government Assistance
Fatima Auwal Chediyar Yangurasa, Chairperson of the Women Gurasa Producers, expressed deep concern over the drastic surge in flour prices. Just a month ago, a 50kg bag of flour cost less than N16,000, but now it has skyrocketed to N43,000, posing significant financial challenges for bread producers. Fatima emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address the hyper rise in flour costs, which has left many bread makers struggling to sustain their businesses and support their families.
Appeal to BUA Flour’s Chairman
In addition to calling for government assistance, the protesters appealed directly to BUA Flour’s Chairman, Abdussamad Isiyaku Rabiu, to take immediate action to alleviate the burden of high flour prices. They highlighted the vital role that BUA products play in their bread-making business and urged the company to consider the difficulties faced by small-scale producers. The women emphasized the detrimental impact of unaffordable flour prices on their ability to generate income and provide for their families, urging BUA Flour to prioritize the interests of bread makers in their pricing policies.
