Kunle Afolayan Laments Rising Incompetence Among Nigerian Job Seekers

Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has expressed deep frustration over what he describes as a growing level of incompetence among job seekers in the country. Taking to Instagram, Afolayan highlighted the irony of many Nigerians complaining about unemployment while failing to deliver when given job opportunities.

In his post, the award-winning actor and director voiced his concerns about the work ethic of many job seekers, stating that the lack of dedication and efficiency is a serious problem affecting productivity across different sectors.

“I am so saddened by the high level of incompetence in our beloved country. A lot of people cry about not having a job, but when they get one, how efficient are they at it? I’m so pissed,” he wrote.

His remarks quickly sparked widespread reactions, with many agreeing that a lack of professionalism and commitment among workers remains a pressing issue in Nigeria. Some shared personal experiences of dealing with unreliable employees, further emphasizing Afolayan’s point.

Popular Nollywood actress Biola Bayo weighed in, saying, “Come ask me o. They apply for jobs, attend interviews, and then won’t show up. The ones you pick don’t resume, and the ones who resume don’t want to work.”

Media personality Stephanie Coker also commented, “I spent the whole weekend discussing this.”

Comedian and skit maker Kiekie echoed similar frustrations, stating, “I am screaming!! This!! It’s alarming!! Even if you have all the money in the world, you won’t get results! The spirit of excellence is zero.”

Many Nigerians in various industries have continued to share their experiences, with some blaming the issue on a poor work culture, lack of training, and an entitlement mentality among young job seekers. Others argue that low wages and unfavorable working conditions contribute to the lack of motivation among workers.

Afolayan’s statement has reignited discussions on the importance of professionalism, efficiency, and work ethics in Nigeria, with many calling for a change in attitude to improve productivity in the workplace.
