Labour Party Lawmakers Donate Six Months’ Salaries to Alleviate Hardship in Anambra
In a commendable display of patriotism and compassion, eight members of the Anambra House of Assembly, representing the Labour Party (LP), have generously donated their six-month salaries to their constituencies. This rare gesture comes amidst the prevailing hardship and hyperinflation in the country, exacerbated by subsidy removal, currency devaluation, and soaring costs of living.
Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) in Anambra, lauded the lawmakers for their empathy towards the plight of their constituents. He emphasized that their actions reflect a deep understanding of the widespread suffering, poverty, unemployment, and insecurity plaguing the nation.
Ezekwueme highlighted the exemplary initiatives undertaken by some legislators, such as the fumigation of communities to combat mosquito-borne diseases like malaria. He emphasized that such acts of service resonate with the essence of politics, which is to serve the country and its citizens.
Calling for transparency in the disbursement of the donated funds, Ezekwueme urged other legislators and politicians to emulate the altruism demonstrated by their colleagues. He also commended federal legislators who have provided significant palliatives for their constituencies and urged those yet to do so to take action to alleviate the suffering of the masses.
