Lagos Assembly Speaker Obasa Impeached Amid Fraud Allegations
The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa following multiple allegations of fraud. The decision was made during a plenary session on Monday, with lawmakers unanimously agreeing to remove him from office.
Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker, making her the first female to hold the position. Additionally, Chief Whip Mojeed Fatai has been appointed as the new Deputy Speaker.
While the specific reasons for Obasa’s impeachment remain unclear, lawmakers emphasized the need for change to restore the integrity of the House. A lawmaker stated, “The Constitution empowers us to regulate our proceedings, and we felt it was time for new leadership to move the House forward.”
Obasa, a six-term lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I under the All Progressives Congress, had previously denied allegations of financial misconduct, including claims of spending ₦17 billion on a gate project and ₦200 million on a Thanksgiving event. He described these accusations as politically motivated and baseless.
The impeachment marks the end of Obasa’s long tenure as Speaker and signals a new chapter for the Lagos State Assembly.
