Lagos Building Agency Sounds Alarm Over Dog Attacks and Violence Against Officials
The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has sounded the alarm over escalating incidents of dog attacks and aggression directed at its officials by developers and property owners resistant to enforcement against physical planning infractions. Kehinde Osinaike, the General Manager, expressed deep concern over habitual non-compliance with notices served on properties in certain areas of the Eti-Osa Local Government Area.
Persistent Non-Compliance
Of particular concern are two estates along Orange Island Road, off Freedom Way, Lekki, where despite repeated visits and issuance of contravention notices, the entities consistently flout regulations. During a visit in December 2023, occupants resorted to aggressive measures, including unleashing dogs, against LASPPPA’s Monitoring and Compliance Units.
Confronting Resistance
On January 31, 2024, LASPPPA, in collaboration with Eti-Osa North District Officers, faced further obstruction from dogs while attempting to dismantle parts of illegal structures. Osinaike expressed disappointment at the developers’ resistance, warning that failure to present Planning Permits would result in document revocation and structure demolition.
Condemnation of Non-Compliance
Osinaike condemned property owners and developers for consistently ignoring notices served to halt construction or present required Planning Permits. He emphasized the need for compliance with town planning laws and urged stakeholders to refrain from obstructing LASPPPA officials, emphasizing the importance of promptly responding to notices issued by the authority.
Call for Cooperation
Amidst rising tensions, LASPPPA calls upon all developers, owners, and property buyers to cooperate with officials and abide by town planning regulations. By working together, they can ensure orderly development and safeguard the interests of all stakeholders in Lagos State.
