Lagos Records $71.6 Million in Revenue During Detty December

Lagos State has once again proven its status as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital, generating over $71.6 million in revenue during the December 2024 season, known as ‘Detty December.’ The revenue, which came from the tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors, highlights the immense economic potential of Lagos as a global destination. Hotels alone accounted for over $44 million, while short-let apartments contributed more than $13 million, underscoring the city’s appeal.

Mr. Idris Aregbe, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, made the announcement during the review of the ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report’ with officials of Tantacom Experimental Projects and other stakeholders. He commended the report, which was released by MO Africa Consulting, noting that tourism continues to be a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the “Ember” season playing a crucial role in this success.

The Detty December season saw Lagos host a range of spectacular events that drew massive crowds, both from within Nigeria and internationally. Among the events were the Mrs. Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, music concerts, fashion shows, cultural exhibitions, and more. The season attracted locals, members of the Nigerian diaspora (IJGBs), and international tourists eager to experience the vibrant energy of Lagos.

Beyond its economic impact, Detty December has become a global platform to showcase Nigerian arts, culture, and music. It has fostered a sense of community, strengthened ties with the diaspora, and reinforced Lagos as a premier cultural tourism destination. Aregbe emphasized that the success of the season was a reflection of the visionary leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, whose dedication to promoting tourism and culture has laid the foundation for such achievements.

Looking ahead, Aregbe expressed confidence that the momentum generated by Detty December will continue into 2025 with the ‘Lagos Tourism is Rising’ campaign. The Lagos State Government remains committed to further enhancing the city’s tourism sector, creating more opportunities for residents, and ensuring that Lagos remains a beacon of tourism, culture, and economic excellence in Africa. Aregbe also thanked the people of Lagos, industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans for their creativity and participation, which played a key role in the success of Detty December.
