Military Dismisses Coup Allegations Against Tinubu, Denounces Rumors as Unfounded

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has unequivocally refuted allegations of a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, dismissing claims of heightened alertness within the Guards Brigade as baseless and malicious. Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, issued a statement condemning the accusations published by an online medium as unfounded and aimed at sowing discord and unrest.

The DHQ clarified that reports suggesting the Guards Brigade was placed on high alert due to suspicious activities were entirely false. Contrary to the allegations, the Brigade maintains a constant state of vigilance as part of its statutory duty to safeguard the seat of power and the Federal Capital Territory. Gusau emphasized that such readiness is routine and essential for the effective execution of their responsibilities.

Highlighting the commitment of the Armed Forces to upholding democracy in Nigeria, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has consistently affirmed their dedication to protecting the nation’s democratic institutions. The DHQ reiterated this stance, denouncing the coup allegations as groundless fabrications intended to incite unnecessary tension among the populace.

In response to the spurious claims, the DHQ announced its intention to pursue legal action against the publisher of the article, Sahara Reporters, and urged relevant security agencies to take appropriate measures. The military authority condemned the dissemination of unsubstantiated assertions and urged the public to disregard the inflammatory rumors, emphasizing the importance of maintaining calm and stability in the country.
