NAFDAC Teaches Secondary School Students About Drug Abuse Dangers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is stepping up efforts to fight drug abuse by educating secondary school students about the dangers of illegal substances.

At Ajibode High School in Ibadan, Oyo State, NAFDAC launched the “Catch Them Young Consumer Safety Club” to raise awareness among young people. The program, which started in January for schools in the South-West, focuses on teaching students about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by South-West Director Mrs. Roseline Ajayi, stressed that tackling drug abuse is vital for Nigeria’s future. She warned that substance abuse can lead to mental health problems, poor academic performance, and risky behavior.

Adeyeye said the program would help students make better choices and resist peer pressure. She encouraged students to use the club to spread awareness about drug abuse and fake products. She also urged teachers to support students dealing with drug-related issues instead of stigmatizing them.

Ajayi reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting young Nigerians, noting that the agency also educates market traders and community members. The Principal of Ajibode High School, Mrs. Adedeji Oyepeju, expressed hope that the initiative would have a lasting impact on students and promote a drug-free society.

A student, Miss Victoria Adetona, shared her experience, saying the program taught her to be content and avoid negative peer pressure.
