Netflix Celebrates Nigeria’s 64th Independence with Exciting New Films

Starting this October, viewers will be treated to a fresh perspective on Nigerian stories that celebrate the nation’s heritage and creativity. One of the standout films in this collection is Hijack 93, which is set to be released on October 25, 2024. This thriller is inspired by true events and tells the gripping story of four young men who hijack a plane in protest against the annulled 1993 elections in Nigeria. The film explores the high-stakes situation these individuals face as they balance their demands with the safety of the passengers and their own freedom. Produced by Play Networks Studios, Hijack 93 features a talented cast, including Nancy Isime, Sharon Ooja, Jemima Osunde, and John Dumelo.
Charles Okpaleke, the producer of Hijack 93, emphasized the importance of telling authentic African stories, saying that historic events like the hijacking are vital to understanding Nigeria’s democracy. He aims to ensure that such stories do not fade from memory, making them accessible to future generations. Alongside Hijack 93, Netflix will also premiere other local titles, such as Inside Life, launching on October 11, and Domitilla, debuting on November 8, showcasing the diversity of Nigerian cinema.

Filming has begun in Ibadan and Ghana, with returning stars like Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, and Lateef Adedimeji.
