Niger Junta Leader Vows to Reject ECOWAS Rejoining, Stands Firm on Detention of Bazoum
General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the military junta in Niger Republic, has reiterated Niger’s stance against seeking re-admission to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), asserting grievances over the bloc’s handling of vital supplies and financial assets.
In an interview with RTN news channel in Niamey, General Tchiani affirmed the decision of the junta, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, to abstain from rejoining ECOWAS, emphasizing the need to prioritize the welfare of citizens amid challenges with supplies and frozen funds.
General Tchiani also reiterated the junta’s refusal to release ousted president Mohammed Bazoum, detained since the July 26, 2023 coup, stating that Bazoum’s release would be detrimental to the interests of Nigeriens.
The withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS, announced on January 27, 2024, reflects a significant shift in regional dynamics, despite previous reconciliation efforts.
In response, the foreign ministers of the three countries proposed the creation of a confederation as part of a strategy to foster unity within a federation.
Despite concerns regarding security and socio-economic repercussions, General Tchiani expressed confidence in Niger’s ability to navigate challenges post-ECOWAS withdrawal, emphasizing self-reliance in the face of global interconnectedness.
The junta’s stance underscores ongoing political tensions and underscores the evolving landscape of regional politics in West Africa.
