Nigeria has captured the spotlight as the fastest-growing country in global pizza consumption, according to a report released by Glovo Nigeria. Lamide Akinola, General Manager of Glovo Nigeria, unveiled these findings, highlighting a remarkable 1,222% increase in pizza orders delivered via Glovo in 2023.
The surge in pizza consumption has propelled Nigeria to the top spot globally, surpassing countries like Tunisia and Armenia, which recorded growth rates of 262% and 164%, respectively. Akinola revealed that chicken-based pizzas dominated the scene, constituting 44% of all deliveries, signaling a strong preference for poultry toppings among Nigerians.
Notable shifts in consumer preferences were also observed in specific pizza recipes, with pizzas containing beef and sausages experiencing staggering surges of 14,471% and 4,141%, respectively. Akinola further detailed size preferences among Nigerians, with “Large” pizzas emerging as favorites, comprising 45% of total orders, followed closely by “Regular or Medium” and “Small” sizes at 28% and 27%, respectively.
While Lagos led the pack in pizza orders with a 57% share, Abuja stole the spotlight for the most expensive pizza order, totaling ₦136,240. Akinola attributed Glovo’s success to its commitment to providing diverse options for consumers, coupled with a 195% increase in pizza partners in 2023, demonstrating support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Glovo, known as a pioneering multi-category app, connects users with businesses and couriers, offering on-demand services from local restaurants, pharmacies, grocers, beauty stores, supermarkets, and high-street retail stores.
