Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Launches Nationwide Protest Against Economic Hardship: Massive Turnout in Abuja

The much-anticipated nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) kicked off today in Abuja, drawing a large turnout of participants amid growing concerns over the economic challenges facing Nigerians.

Scheduled for February 27 and 28, the protest aims to address the escalating cost of living across the country, particularly affecting civil servants who are grappling with the harsh economic realities.

NLC had earlier alerted its members nationwide, spanning all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urging them to join hands in demanding solutions to the prevailing economic hardship.

This protest follows the issuance of a 14-day strike notice by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to the Federal Government on February 8. The notice was served due to the government’s failure to implement agreements reached on October 2, particularly regarding the removal of fuel subsidy.

In light of the ongoing economic struggles faced by Nigerians, the NLC opted for a two-day nationwide protest to amplify their demands and push for immediate action from the authorities.

Despite security advisories issued by the Department of State Services (DSS), which raised concerns about potential unrest, the union proceeded with the protest in various cities across the nation.

Witnesses reported a significant influx of aggrieved Nigerians and workers converging at the Labour House in Abuja, accompanied by security operatives, as the protest gained momentum during the early hours of Tuesday.
