Nigeria Struggles with Shortage of VVF Specialists as Cases Increase, Says Dr. Lengmang

Dr. Sunday Lengmang, an esteemed Fistula expert based in Jos, Plateau State, has raised concerns over the scarcity of specialists in the field of Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) in Nigeria.

As the Director of the VVF Centre at Bingham Teaching Hospital, Dr. Lengmang expressed dismay at the nation’s limited capacity, with only six specialists equipped to handle complex VVF cases. He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to bolster personnel training, especially given the surge in VVF cases nationwide.

Dr. Lengmang made these remarks during the annual reunion ceremony hosted by the VVF Centre in Jos. He highlighted the Center’s outreach efforts across various states, including Taraba, Kano, Gombe, Lagos, Katsina, and Uyo, aimed at providing crucial treatment to women grappling with VVF challenges.

One of the key issues highlighted by Dr. Lengmang was the financial burden faced by many VVF patients, most of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite the Center’s provision of free treatment, the overwhelming demand underscores the pressing need for additional specialists and financial support from the government.

Echoing Dr. Lengmang’s sentiments, Prof. Stephen Anzaku, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, emphasized the importance of the annual reunion in fostering a supportive community among former patients. He underscored the Center’s commitment to offering free treatment as a means of restoring dignity and hope to VVF patients.

Addressing the escalating prevalence of VVF cases nationwide, Prof. Anzaku called upon the government and philanthropic individuals to contribute to the expansion of the Center’s operations. This collective effort is essential in addressing the growing healthcare needs of VVF patients and alleviating their suffering.

VVF, characterized by an abnormal opening between the bladder and vagina leading to continuous urinary incontinence, remains a significant health challenge in Nigeria. The concerted efforts of specialists like Dr. Lengmang and institutions like the VVF Centre are crucial in providing relief and support to affected individuals.
