Nigerian Government Initiates Payment of Withheld Salaries to ASUU Members
In a recent development, the Nigerian government has taken steps to disburse the salaries that were previously withheld from public university lecturers, including members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Comrade Nobert Oyibo Eze, the Chairman of ASUU at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka branch, confirmed this significant progress to DAILY POST, stating that payments have indeed commenced. “Yes, they have started paying. Even though I’m yet to receive mine, some of our lecturers have received two months’ payments out of the outstanding eight months’ withheld salary,” Eze remarked.
Further validating this, another lecturer disclosed to DAILY POST that the federal government initiated payments on Sunday, with two months’ worth of salaries already disbursed out of the owed eight months.
This action follows President Bola Tinubu’s decision in October 2023 to authorize the release of four months’ worth of withheld salaries to ASUU members, addressing a portion of the outstanding debt owed to them.
It’s important to note that the withholding of salaries stems from the implementation of a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ by former President Muhammadu Buhari in response to ASUU’s eight-month strike in 2022.
