Nigerian Literary Icon Mabel Segun Passes Away at 95
Renowned Nigerian writer, broadcaster, and sportswoman Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun has passed away at the age of 95. Her family confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt statement on Thursday, describing her as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was dedicated to literature, sports, and public service.
“It is with deep gratitude to God for a life well lived in the service of Literature, Broadcasting, and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved Mabel,” the statement read. “She passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 6, 2025, leaving behind an enduring legacy of creativity, passion, and service.”
Born on February 18, 1930, Mabel Segun was a woman of many talents, excelling as a writer, athlete, broadcaster, and diplomat. She studied English Literature, Latin, and History at the University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), graduating in 1953. Her intellectual journey paved the way for an illustrious career that influenced generations of Nigerians.
Segun’s literary works enriched Nigerian literature, while her pioneering role in broadcasting inspired many. She was also an accomplished athlete, proving that her talents transcended a single field. As a diplomat, she further expanded her contributions to society, making a lasting impact on multiple fronts.
Throughout her life, she believed that true success was measured not by accolades but by the positive influence one leaves behind. Her groundbreaking achievements in literature, sports, and media continue to inspire younger generations, making her a towering figure in Nigerian history.
Mabel Segun is survived by her children, Gbenga and Omowunmi Segun, as well as her grandchildren, who will carry forward her extraordinary legacy. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
