Nigerian Navy Steps Up Efforts Against Oil Theft in Bayelsa

Intensified Operations

The Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH has ramped up its Operation Cordon and Search activities within Bayelsa State to combat oil theft and other maritime crimes. Commodore Olushina Ojebode, Commander of NNS SOROH, disclosed that patrols conducted between January 22 and 29 resulted in the discovery and destruction of illegally refined products, underscoring the navy’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment.

Successful Patrols

During these patrols, troops uncovered and dismantled operations involved in the illegal refining of stolen crude oil. In Diebu community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, 17,000 liters of suspected stolen products were recovered from a building. Additionally, patrols in Zion Area of Ezetu community and Gbaran community led to the interception of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and other contraband items.

Crackdown on Illegal Activities

The navy’s operations, conducted under Operation Delta Sanity, target crude oil theft, illegal oil bunkering, and related crimes. Through proactive measures and intelligence-driven tactics, the Nigerian Navy is making significant strides in curbing illicit activities within its area of responsibility.

Seizure of Illegal Equipment

In a recent cordon and search operation at a fishing camp around Atlas axis in the Ezetu community, the NNS SOROH patrol team seized and deactivated various items used in constructing illegal refining sites. These included pumping machines, generators, galvanized pipes, and empty containers, demonstrating the navy’s resolve to dismantle illegal operations and disrupt criminal networks.

Commander Ojebode reiterated the navy’s unwavering commitment to curbing oil theft and maritime crimes to promote national prosperity. He affirmed that the base would continue to conduct operations aimed at securing the maritime domain and fostering an environment conducive to legitimate businesses.

As the Nigerian Navy intensifies its efforts against oil theft in Bayelsa, the operation serves as a testament to the government’s determination to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources and uphold maritime security.
