Nonso Diobi Reveals How Hilda Dokubo Helped Launch His Nollywood Career
Nollywood actor Nonso Diobi has credited veteran actress Hilda Dokubo for helping him secure his first major acting role, a turning point in his career. Diobi shared this story during an appearance on the Nollywood Hardcore podcast, where he reflected on his struggles in the industry.
Diobi revealed that before his breakthrough, he had attended over 1,000 auditions without success. However, his big break came when Hilda Dokubo, who noticed his resemblance to her, took an interest in him while he was on a movie set.
“She spotted me and saw something in me that others didn’t,” Diobi said, highlighting the pivotal moment that changed the course of his career. Her support, he explained, opened doors that had previously been closed to him, paving the way for his rise in Nollywood.
He further recalled the moment when he was at an audition and overheard people calling him from afar. As he approached them, Hilda Dokubo recognized him and said, “This young boy looks like me. He can play my brother.” That was how Diobi landed his first movie role after three years and over 1,000 unsuccessful auditions, and he did not even have to audition for it.
