NSC Chairman Calls for Grassroots Sports Development
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has emphasized the need for a strategic focus on the development of homegrown talent in Nigeria’s sports sector. Dikko called for more robust developmental programs that will fast-track the growth of local athletes, enabling them to compete effectively on the global stage.
Speaking during a meeting with Federation Presidents and secretaries at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Dikko stated that the Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, has given the NSC the mandate to revitalize the sports sector to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy. He noted that the true measure of success in sports should not be limited to international participation or medal wins, but should also include the nurturing of talent at the grassroots level through comprehensive development programs.
As part of the strategy, Dikko revealed that the NSC plans to reopen its zonal, state, and local government offices across the country to ensure that more grassroots talents are discovered and developed. “Achievements in sports are not just about participation or winning medals but about developing athletes at home,” Dikko said. He stressed the importance of creating value for sports as a national asset, calling for effective regulations and the engagement of sponsors to provide the necessary incentives for athletes.
Further plans to revamp Nigerian sports were discussed by the Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, who highlighted the Commission’s commitment to implementing innovative strategies. According to Olopade, the meeting was convened to keep the Federation leaders informed about the Commission’s strategic decisions aimed at improving the country’s sports standing globally.
Olopade announced that plans were in place to introduce Chief Operating Officers (COOs) to serve as marketing consultants for the Federations. These COOs will help generate funds to support the operations of the various Federations. Additionally, the Elite Development and Podium Group, which has replaced the Podium Committee, will work closely with the Federations to ensure that Nigerian athletes perform well in future international competitions.
“We are determined to deliver results using cutting-edge innovations and strategic approaches,” Olopade stated, adding that the NSC’s goal is to position Nigeria’s sports sector for success and recognition globally. He also mentioned that the NSC is preparing new election guidelines for the Federations, emphasizing corporate governance to attract corporate sponsorship and funding.
The introduction of COOs and the restructured Podium Group is seen as a major step toward professionalizing the management of sports in Nigeria. Olopade revealed that Bambo Akanni is being considered to head the Elite Development and Podium Group, which will oversee the strategic development of athletes starting from the February training grants.
