Obasanjo Advocates Stronger Economic Ties Between Nigeria and Angola
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged for enhanced bilateral relations between Nigeria and Angola, emphasizing the potential for increased collaboration between the two countries. Speaking at the Angola-Nigeria Diplomatic-Business Investment meeting in Lagos, Obasanjo highlighted the importance of boosting trade volume within Africa and promoting economic partnerships on the continent.
He expressed concerns about infrastructural deficits, particularly in transportation, which hinder seamless trade between nations. Obasanjo emphasized the need to address these challenges to facilitate smoother movement of goods across borders. Additionally, he underscored the significance of promoting intra-African trade and economic self-sufficiency.
Echoing Obasanjo’s sentiments, Olusegun Awolowo, Secretary of Nigeria’s National Action Committee of AFCFTA, lamented the lack of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) between Nigeria and Angola, emphasizing the untapped potential for economic engagement between the two largest oil exporters in Africa. He called for increased trade between the two countries, noting the complementary nature of their economies.
Fifi Ejindu, President of the Angola-Nigeria Business Council, urged positive steps toward fostering smoother trade ties between Nigeria and Angola, highlighting the support from Angolan government authorities. She noted growing interest and participation in trade initiatives between the two nations.
Dr. Armando Manuel, former Minister of Finance in Angola, expressed optimism about the discussions at the diplomatic-business investment meeting, signaling potential for tangible outcomes in various sectors. He highlighted opportunities in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and energy, inviting Nigerian investors to explore investment prospects in Angola.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki expressed anticipation for the outcomes of the Angola-Nigeria business meeting, emphasizing the diverse opportunities discussed, including the construction of a Free Trade Zone, tourism, energy, and air travel.
