Omokri Advises Tinubu Against Foreign Trips with Family Amidst Divisions
Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against undertaking official foreign trips accompanied by his children, particularly his son, Seyi Tinubu, amidst Nigeria’s divisive political climate.
While acknowledging that there is no legal prohibition against the President traveling with family members, Omokri emphasized the potential negative optics of such actions, especially in light of the country’s deep divisions following the 2023 presidential election and the removal of fuel subsidy.
In a statement shared on X, Omokri stated, “If I were President of Nigeria at this time when the country is bitterly divided… I would not take my children on an official business trip overseas.” He expressed concern that such actions could be misconstrued by political opponents and the media, potentially undermining the administration’s credibility.
Omokri cited examples of other leaders, such as Margaret Thatcher, President Obasanjo, and even current U.S. President Joe Biden, who have involved family members in official engagements. However, he emphasized the unique sensitivity of the current Nigerian political climate, cautioning against actions that could exacerbate existing tensions.
While acknowledging the legality of Tinubu’s actions, Omokri urged caution, suggesting that the President should avoid situations that could further inflame divisions in a nation already fraught with political tensions.
