Omoluabi Progressives’ Journey to Reviving Ideology and Shaping the Future of Politics

Politics is driven by interests, but beyond these interests lies a shared vision, known as ideology. In political science, ideology refers to a set of principles or beliefs that explain how society should function and offer a blueprint for social order. A political party’s ideology helps the electorate understand what the party stands for and what to expect if it comes to power, eliminating unrealistic expectations.

On December 10, key leaders of the Omoluabi Progressives gathered in Ilesa to strengthen their ideological foundation. Since its inception, the group has aligned itself with the social welfarism ideology of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, passed down through leaders like Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Abraham Adesanya, and Chief Bola Ige. The meeting focused on Awolowo’s political practices, particularly his leadership in the Western Region, his role as the opposition leader in the First Republic, and his presidential candidacy in the Second Republic.

At the event, former Senator Babafemi Ojudu urged members of the Omoluabi Progressives to embrace Awolowo’s philosophy, particularly his advocacy for true federalism. Ojudu highlighted that Awolowo’s writings, especially in Path to Nigerian Freedom, warned against a unitary system masquerading as federalism. He criticized today’s leaders for prioritizing short-term gains over long-term development and commended Omoluabi Progressives for following Awolowo’s example. Ojudu shared a conversation with Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, where Aregbesola emphasized the need for leaders to focus on building a just and equitable society. Ojudu emphasized that Awolowo’s commitment to education as the “road to progress” should inspire today’s leaders to invest in intellectual development for societal growth.

Comrade Adebayo Ojo, a pro-democracy advocate, spoke about the importance of adhering to progressive principles such as democracy, federalism, pan-Africanism, and humanism. He noted that these ideals must be more than just rhetoric; they must be put into practice to achieve the goals of the Omoluabi Progressives. Ojo stressed that corruption has become deeply entrenched in society, and the only way to effect meaningful change is through a determined commitment to these values. He called on the group to stay focused on their mission to save Osun State and, ultimately, Nigeria.

Former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, emphasized the need for continuous reflection and knowledge sharing within the Omoluabi Progressives. He stressed that political power should be used responsibly to ensure the welfare of the people, and leadership must be rooted in a commitment to mass prosperity. Aregbesola underscored the importance of shaping a society that is fair and sustainable, one that will benefit future generations.

Alhaji Azeez Adesiji, Chairman of Omoluabi Progressives, echoed Aregbesola’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of ideological grounding and leadership development. He praised Aregbesola for embodying the principles of Awolowo’s political legacy and for recognizing the need to return to those ideals in today’s political climate. Adesiji acknowledged that the current political system is fraught with selfishness and insincerity, but he believes that a return to Awolowo’s principles is the solution.

The meeting concluded with participants pledging to apply the lessons learned and continue working towards the goals of the Omoluabi Progressives. The group remains committed to fostering a new generation of leaders who will prioritize integrity, discipline, and progressive values for the betterment of Nigeria.
