Opposition Coalition Struggles to Find Party Platform for 2027 Elections

A coalition of top opposition leaders working to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections is facing difficulties in securing a strong political party platform. The group includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former SGF Babachir Lawal.

According to Salihu Moh. Lukman, a former APC leader, negotiations are still ongoing as members work to set aside personal ambitions and unite for the elections. However, the biggest challenge remains finding a reliable party, especially as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has allegedly refused to register new political parties. Lukman claimed that even smaller parties that met electoral requirements are now facing internal crises, making it harder for the coalition to choose a platform.

Addressing zoning concerns, Lukman stated that the coalition has not officially discussed the issue. He also dismissed reports of internal disagreements, saying the group remains committed to finalizing its plans.

He accused the ruling APC of trying to weaken opposition parties and create a one-party system. Despite these challenges, he assured Nigerians that efforts to build a strong alternative would continue. He emphasized that the coalition’s goal is to strengthen democracy by ensuring fair political competition.

The group plans to conclude its negotiations soon and announce its next steps. Lukman urged Nigerians to support the movement, stressing the importance of keeping democracy competitive and fair.
