Oyo Government Seals Church in Ibadan Over Noise Pollution Concerns

Oyo State Government Takes Action Against Noisy Church

The Oyo State Government has taken decisive action by sealing a new generation church located at Golden Estate, Oluyole, Ibadan, the state capital, citing persistent noise pollution as the primary reason.

Seal Order Due to Unresolved Noise Pollution Complaints

According to Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, the sealing of the Christ Life Church branch was a culmination of unresolved complaints from residents in the vicinity regarding incessant noise disturbances emanating from the church’s activities. Despite efforts by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to mediate the dispute between residents and the church management, the issue remained unresolved.

Government Intervention and Compliance Measures

Government officials visited the area on November 9, 2023, following numerous complaints about noise pollution. The sound levels recorded during the church activities exceeded the permissible limit for residential areas during daytime, contravening environmental regulations. Despite a resolution meeting held on November 29, 2023, where the church declined to sign an undertaking letter to comply with noise regulations, the government proceeded with the seal order due to continued non-compliance.

Adherence to Environmental Regulations

The sealing of the church premises underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations aimed at preserving the quality of life for residents. The Extant Environmental Regulations of 2023 outline specific noise limits for residential areas during daytime, with the aim of maintaining peace and tranquility within communities.

Preventive Measures to Avert Tensions

Commissioner Mogbonjubola emphasized that the seal order was a preventive measure to forestall potential tensions between residents and the church during subsequent worship services. By taking proactive steps to address noise pollution concerns, the government aims to uphold the well-being and harmony of the community.

The sealing of the church serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to environmental regulations to ensure a conducive living environment for all residents. As the government continues its efforts to promote environmental sustainability, collaboration between stakeholders is essential to address and mitigate potential sources of pollution effectively.
