Peter Obi Urges Labour Party Lawmakers to Defend Democracy Amid Rivers Crisis

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on his party’s lawmakers in the National Assembly to uphold democratic integrity amid the political crisis in Rivers State. His statement comes in response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which Obi described as unconstitutional and harmful to Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi urged Labour Party legislators not to support any action that compromises democratic values, undermines the interests of Rivers State residents, or contradicts principles of fairness and transparency. He emphasized that lawmakers must not allow themselves to be used as instruments of injustice or betrayal of the people’s mandate.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s democracy has suffered setbacks over the years due to electoral malpractice, disregard for qualifications, and unconstitutional removal of elected officials. Given these challenges, Obi stressed the importance of prioritizing justice and ensuring the well-being of Rivers State citizens.

His appeal reflects growing concerns over governance and the need for legislative leaders to resist actions that may weaken democratic institutions.
