Peter Weir to Receive Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award at Venice Film Festival
Esteemed Australian director and screenwriter Peter Weir, renowned for cinematic gems such as “The Truman Show,” “Dead Poets Society,” and “Gallipoli,” is set to be honored with the prestigious Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Alberto Barbera, the festival’s artistic director, praised Weir’s illustrious career spanning 40 years and 13 remarkable films, lauding his ability to seamlessly blend artistic integrity with commercial success.
Weir’s oeuvre, characterized by daring storytelling and cinematic spectacle, reflects a unique balance of personal reflection and broad audience appeal, earning him a distinguished place among the great directors of modern cinema.

Born in Sydney in 1944, Weir’s cinematic journey began as a trainee director before he made his mark with his debut feature, “The Cars That Ate Paris,” in 1974. He soon emerged as a trailblazer of Australian new wave cinema with acclaimed works like “Picnic At Hanging Rock” and “Gallipoli,” which garnered international acclaim.
Transitioning to Hollywood, Weir continued to captivate audiences with acclaimed films such as “Witness,” “Dead Poets Society,” and “The Truman Show,” earning multiple Oscar nominations and accolades throughout his illustrious career. In 2022, he made history as the first Australian filmmaker to receive an honorary Oscar.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Weir announced his retirement from filmmaking in March, citing a depletion of energy. Nonetheless, his indelible contributions to cinema continue to resonate, and the Venice Film Festival’s recognition serves as a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy.
