Petrol Scarcity Looms in Abuja Amid Supply Concerns
Marketers of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, have raised alarm over a looming scarcity in Abuja due to concerns regarding supply shortages from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The situation has prompted fuel queues to resurface at stations across the city.
Several petrol stations in Abuja have reportedly shut down, leading to longer waiting times for motorists attempting to refill their tanks. Despite the supposed deregulation of the downstream segment of the industry, NNPC remains the sole importer of PMS, contributing to the challenges faced by marketers.
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has voiced its concerns over the inadequate supply of products to its members. Abubakar Shettima, a top member of the association, highlighted the issue, indicating that the situation may become clearer in the coming days.
Similarly, Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, the national president of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), acknowledged a supply glitch but assured that it would not necessarily lead to scarcity. He noted that fuel is available at their stations; however, motorists’ inability to afford purchases amidst current economic hardships exacerbates the situation.
Contrary to these concerns, Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, stated that there is no supply issue. He attributed recent tightness in certain areas to a brief distribution issue in Lagos, which has since been resolved.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and consumers alike are urged to monitor developments closely, with the hope that measures will be taken to address any potential disruptions in petrol supply across Abuja and beyond.
