Riots Erupt After Arrest of Druglord, El-Chapo’s son in Mexico

In the Mexican state of Sinaloa, riots broke out after the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán aka Mouse (El Ratón), son of drug lord Joaquin Guzmán, nicknamed Shorty (El Chapo), reports El País.

Shots broke out between security forces and members of the drug cartel in the Sinaloa capital of Culicana, as well as Los Mochis and Mazatlán, and some streets were blocked by burning cars. The state government urged residents to stay off the streets. Schools, universities and administrative offices suspended operations.

Aeromexico Airlines reported that its plane was fired upon as it departed from Culicana Airport, no one was injured. The carrier canceled flights to and from Los Mochis and Mazatlán, and the Federal Aviation Administration announced the closure of Culicana Airport.

Ten people were killed and at least 29 injured in police and Army shootings with drug cartel members, the governor of Sinaloa said. Among the dead were a police officer, a National Guard officer, five Mexican Army soldiers and three civilians. Two hundred and fifty cars were stolen and several stores were looted.
