Rita Dominic Opens Up About Quitting Acting and Finding Purpose as a Caregiver
Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Dominic has candidly shared the reasons behind her decision to step away from the spotlight and pursue a career in caregiving.
In a heartfelt revelation, Dominic disclosed that she took a hiatus from acting in 2002 and relocated to the United Kingdom due to personal challenges she was facing at the time. During this period, she found solace in caring for adults with special needs, a role she embraced wholeheartedly.
Speaking at the 2024 Women of Valour Conference in Accra, Ghana, Dominic emphasized that while some might perceive her transition to caregiving as a “step-down,” she viewed it as a source of immense joy and purpose during a difficult period in her life.
Recounting her journey, Dominic revealed, “In 2001/2002 I stopped acting. I left the [movie] industry and moved to London because it was a very dark period in my life. I fell out with some friends I considered family. And I just gave up acting for a while. I needed to get out of that space for a minute.”
She continued, “And then I moved to London and gave up stardom. You won’t believe this, this is something I’ve never told people before. While in London, I was trying to make ends meet so I started working in a care home as a caregiver for adults with special needs. While some might view it as a step-down, I don’t. Taking care of others brought me joy and purpose at a time I need it most.”
Dominic’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing personal well-being and finding fulfillment outside conventional career paths. Her resilience and dedication to finding purpose amidst challenges inspire many, reflecting the true essence of strength and courage.
