‘Romeo and Juliet’ Star Olivia Hussey Passes Away at 73
Olivia Hussey, the beloved actress who brought Juliet to life in Franco Zeffirelli’s iconic 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has died at the age of 73. Her family confirmed the heartbreaking news on Instagram, describing her as a “remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched everyone who knew her.”
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951, Hussey rose to international fame at just 15 years old with her portrayal of Juliet opposite Leonard Whiting in the Oscar-winning adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year” and solidified her legacy in film history.
Beyond Romeo and Juliet, Hussey had a distinguished career spanning decades. She appeared in the 1974 cult classic Black Christmas and the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, among other notable roles.
In 2023, Hussey and her Romeo and Juliet co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against the studio behind the film, alleging child abuse over a controversial nude scene involving the underage actors. Although the lawsuit was dismissed, Hussey defended the scene in a 2018 interview, emphasizing her professionalism and awareness during the filming process.
Hussey’s journey began in London, where she moved at the age of seven with her British mother and Argentine father. She trained at the prestigious Italia Conti drama school, where her talent was nurtured before she landed her breakthrough role.
She is survived by her husband, musician David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild. Hussey’s remarkable career and enduring legacy continue to inspire generations of actors and fans alike.
