Ruggedman Critiques Afrobeats: “A Haven for Talentless People”

Veteran rapper Michael Ugochukwu Steven, known as Ruggedman, has stirred up controversy with his recent remarks, suggesting that many “talentless people” are taking refuge under the banner of Afrobeats.

In a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo, Ruggedman expressed his view that the term Afrobeats has become a shelter for artists lacking genuine talent.

“When you ask me what Afrobeats is, I would say Afrobeats is what a lot of talentless people hide behind,” Ruggedman stated frankly.

He further clarified his stance by emphasizing that the phrase “Afrobeats to the world” should be attributed to certain artists rather than the genre as a whole. He believes that not all artists representing Afrobeats truly exemplify its essence.

Moreover, Ruggedman shared his personal experience of facing criticism on social media, where some claim his time as an artist has passed. Despite this, he finds solace in knowing that his influence has paved the way for aspiring artists who may currently be inspired by his work.
