Ruggedman Defends Davido Over Nigeria’s Economy Comments

Nigerian rapper Ruggedman has come to the defense of singer Davido, who recently sparked controversy with his comments about Nigeria’s struggling economy. During an appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, Davido urged Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria, citing issues like poor leadership, a declining exchange rate, and rising oil prices as major concerns. He described the country’s economy as “shambles,” drawing strong reactions from Nigerians and the government.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, Ruggedman supported Davido’s statements, saying they were not only true but also reflective of what many Nigerians feel. “Davido said what he said, and if you check the response from a lot of Nigerians, you will see they all feel the same way. He did not tell a lie. Those who are unhappy with him are unhappy not because he said the truth, but because he said it publicly,” Ruggedman explained. He further emphasized that had Davido praised Nigeria’s economy, people would still not be pleased with him. According to Ruggedman, Davido’s comments might even encourage the government to take action and address the economic issues.

Ruggedman also criticized the backlash against Davido, describing it as unnecessary but predictable. He pointed out that people loyal to the government are upset because Davido’s remarks were not in line with their views. He found it particularly amusing that some people accused Davido of “de-marketing” Nigeria, when in reality, foreign countries are already well aware of the country’s economic struggles. “Other countries have embassies in Nigeria and know the condition of our economy firsthand,” he said.

In addition to commenting on the controversy surrounding Davido’s remarks, Ruggedman shared his excitement about the success of his new show, Rugged Sessions. The show, which features celebrities discussing various topics, has generated significant attention, especially the episode with TV host Frank Edoho. Ruggedman expressed his surprise that many people didn’t know Edoho raps. He also teased future episodes, including one featuring actress Iyabo Ojo, saying, “I wonder what they will say when they watch Iyabo Ojo’s edition.”

Ruggedman’s comments reflect the complex nature of discussing Nigeria’s economic challenges in a public forum. While some may feel uncomfortable with the truth being spoken, his support of Davido suggests a recognition that open dialogue about these issues is essential for progress.
