Segun Arinze Reflects on Past Rift with Emeka Ike and Emphasizes Personal Growth
Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has reflected on his past disagreement with fellow actor Emeka Ike, revealing that the issue has long been resolved and emphasizing the importance of personal growth. The fallout between the two actors, which occurred around 2009, was linked to a leadership dispute within the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
In a candid interview with QEDNG, Arinze explained that while the disagreement had made headlines at the time, it was never a deep-seated quarrel. He clarified that the issue was related to a leadership role within the guild, and both actors were deeply involved in its operations, which led to tensions over its direction. However, Arinze stressed that the conflict has since ended, with both actors remaining on good terms.
“Emeka Ike is a fine actor. We still talk; we laugh about those things. It doesn’t change the fact that he is a fine actor,” Arinze shared. He added that time has healed any lingering issues, and they have both moved on with their lives. “He is my friend, and we are cool. I’ve asked him to go for lunch or dinner whenever he is around,” he said.
Arinze also spoke about his perspective on harboring animosity, explaining that he no longer sees the value in holding onto past grudges. “What are we having enemies for? Hate is a burden. Travel light. How long do you have to live in the world? You want to carry it on your shoulders?” he reflected.
The actor also discussed the challenges of typecasting in Nollywood, expressing a desire to diversify his roles. He commended colleagues such as Olu Jacobs, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Ramsey Nouah for successfully evolving their careers and avoiding being pigeonholed into specific character types.
On rivalry within the Nigerian film industry, Arinze urged a more collaborative approach, saying, “There is no need for competition. The sky is big enough for the birds to fly.” He emphasized that success in Nollywood should be celebrated rather than viewed as a competition.
