Shakira Critiques Barbie Movie: “My Children Hated It”

Shakira, amidst her flourishing career with the release of her latest album ‘Las mujeres ya no lloran’ (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), has found herself embroiled in controversy over her opinions regarding the Barbie movie. Despite claims on social media that her separation from Piqué fueled her resurgence, Shakira remains resolute in her musical pursuits. The Colombian singer, now in full promotional swing for her new album, took a surprising detour during an interview with Allure magazine to express her dissatisfaction with the Barbie movie.

According to Shakira, her children were far from impressed with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. In fact, her two boys vehemently expressed their disdain, deeming the movie “emasculating.” Shakira acknowledged their sentiments, admitting, “to a certain extent, I agree with them.” She emphasized her desire to raise empowered boys while respecting women’s empowerment without diminishing masculinity.

“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent,” Shakira explained. “I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”
