Shehu Sani Reveals He Almost Got Suspended for Disclosing Senators’ Allowances
Former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani has revealed that he narrowly avoided a six-month suspension in 2018 after disclosing the salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers.
In a post on X, Sani credited former Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, for intervening and preventing his suspension. He recalled that his revelation nearly cost him his position, saying, “When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the senators, it nearly earned me a six months suspension if not for divine intervention, Saraki and Ekwerenmadu’s immediate rescue.”
In 2018, Sani had exposed that senators received N13.5 million monthly as running costs, alongside N200 million for constituency projects. His disclosure sparked controversy, as lawmakers’ earnings are typically kept secret.
Sani’s comments come amid the recent suspension of Kogi Central senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended for six months following a report by the Senate Committee on Ethics. Her suspension followed an altercation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she accused of making unwanted advances toward her.
