Shehu Sani Urges Prayers Amid Naira Depreciation
Former lawmaker and prominent social critic, Shehu Sani, has called upon Nigerian Muslims and Christians to invoke divine intervention amidst the ongoing depreciation of the Naira’s value. Expressing concern over the economic challenges facing the nation, Sani took to his social media platform to offer guidance to adherents of both religions, urging them to pray for a miraculous turnaround.
In a post shared on his X handle, Sani proposed a spiritual approach to address the currency’s devaluation. He suggested that Muslims dedicate their prayers for the Naira on Friday, while Christians do the same on Sunday, anticipating a miraculous improvement by Monday. However, in the event of no apparent change, he recommended a seven-day fasting period, emphasizing the need for repentance.
The Naira’s recent decline saw it plummet to N1,740.00 per US Dollar on Tuesday, marking a significant decrease from N1,660 on the previous day, as reported by the parallel market. Despite this, there was a notable surge in the turnover of US Dollar supply at the official foreign exchange market, increasing by 76.61% to $117.32 million. Consequently, the Naira experienced a marginal appreciation, reaching N1,551.24 per US dollar on Tuesday, a slight improvement from N1,574.62 on Monday.
This development marked the first instance of the Naira’s appreciation against the US dollar at the official foreign exchange market since the preceding Thursday, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the prevailing economic challenges.
