Vice-President Senator Kashim Shettima is set to deliver the keynote speech at the 2024 Zuma International Film Festival, an event that brings together African and international cinema talents. The festival, scheduled to run from December 1st to 5th, 2024, in Abuja, has become a significant platform for filmmakers and creative industry professionals. This year’s event aims to highlight the growing importance of the film industry in Africa and globally.
Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, announced this during a press briefing in Abuja. She emphasized that the festival would offer opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and cultural exchange within the film industry. The Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), in partnership with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration, is organizing the event. Over the years, the Zuma International Film Festival has grown into one of the most important gatherings for filmmakers and enthusiasts across Africa.
Vice-President Shettima’s lecture will focus on “Digital Ecosystem Redefining African Cinema.” The discussion will center on how digital advancements are reshaping the African film industry by creating jobs, generating wealth, and promoting regional trade. Musawa emphasized that the lecture aims to position Nigeria as not only a creative hub for Africa but also a global cultural leader. The government is working on supportive policies and international partnerships to create a favorable environment for the creative sector.
Musawa further highlighted the need for Africa to embrace the digital era together. The creative industries, particularly film and music, have the power to bring about this transformation, and Nigeria is at the forefront. The event will also feature discussions with industry experts from across the continent, examining how the digital shift impacts filmmaking in Africa. This collaboration is expected to foster greater cultural exchange and push the industry to new heights.
The festival is set to showcase Abuja as a growing cultural center in Nigeria. Musawa praised the efforts of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Minister of State for FCT Dr. Maria Mahmoud for their continuous support in promoting the event. With plans to elevate Abuja’s status in global creative and cultural events, the festival will attract a wide range of attendees and participants.
Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade John, also expressed her excitement about the festival. She shared her thoughts on how film plays a crucial role in promoting tourism by telling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide. John recalled her recent trip to South Korea, where there was great interest in Nigerian films, reflecting the growing global recognition of Nigeria’s creative talent.
Overall, the Zuma International Film Festival is expected to be a major success, fostering collaboration and creativity. Through partnerships and new initiatives, the event will further cement Nigeria’s position as a leader in the global creative industry. The festival will not only contribute to Nigerian cinema but also enhance its standing in African and global markets.
