Simi Drey Reveals She Called Off Her Marriage Plans After Engagement

Award-winning British-Nigerian presenter and actress Simi Drey has shared her experience of calling off her marriage plans after getting engaged. During a recent episode of the WithChude podcast, Simi opened up about her decision to cancel the marriage with her former fiancé, explaining that she felt unfulfilled and unhappy despite the engagement.

Simi reflected on her relationship, stating that it wasn’t perfect but also not toxic. She noted that her ex-partner never cheated or was abusive, but she simply wasn’t happy. She added, “You know when you are not 100% fulfilled or happy,” and pointed out that in many cultures, there is immense pressure, especially on women, to get married. Despite her parents not pressuring her, her friends often asked, “When will you get married?”

After her engagement, Simi started to feel doubts. She recalled feeling a sense of apprehension, questioning, “Is he really the person I am going to marry?” When she told her mother about the engagement, her mom, who is very close to her, gave a subtle warning, saying, “Simi, don’t do this,” even though she would never force her daughter’s hand. Simi’s uncertainty deepened, and she later called her father, ending the call in tears, not of joy, but of apprehension.

Two months after the engagement, Simi spoke to her fiancé about taking a break to work on their relationship before thinking about marriage. But within a month, she realized that she didn’t want to marry him. Simi admitted that she wanted to marry for the right reasons, feeling she deserved more than a relationship where she wasn’t fully respected or happy. She ended the engagement, despite facing criticism from people around her.

Looking back, Simi shared that leaving the relationship helped her understand that being single and happy is far better than being married and miserable. She emphasized that respect and equality are key in any relationship, stating, “If I do not feel respected or feel a man is superior to me because of his title or finances, it is a no.”
