Sowunmi, Former Ogun PDP Gubernatorial Candidate, Plans to Challenge Tinubu in 2027 Election
The Alternative, a new political movement focused on challenging the existing order, was launched in Jos, Plateau State, on December 5, 2024. Otunba Segun Sowunmi, the former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, led the initiative, declaring that Nigerians are ready for a change. He emphasized that the 2027 presidential election would be a critical turning point, offering an alternative to the current political system dominated by self-serving leaders.
At the North Central zone national opposition movement town hall meeting in Jos, Sowunmi expressed frustration with Nigeria’s current political state, where corruption and a lack of accountability have hindered effective governance. He called for stronger laws to punish political misconduct and highlighted the need for a thorough review of the political system, including the roles of the government, opposition parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the judiciary.
Sowunmi also addressed concerns over low voter turnout and vote-buying, urging citizens to become more engaged in the political process. “In a democracy, every citizen must actively participate in shaping their governance,” he said. “The movement is designed to empower people to support candidates who truly represent their interests, promoting a more inclusive political environment.”
The former PDP gubernatorial candidate underscored that the movement’s goal is to offer a platform that enables citizens to reject corrupt practices and demand accountability from their leaders. He criticized the current political system, stating that it has failed to serve the people effectively and must be reformed.
Adai Edwin Adai, Chairman of the North Central Zone National Opposition Movement, also spoke at the event. He criticized the electoral irregularities that have plagued the country, mentioning the recent off-season elections in Edo and Ondo states, which were marred by rigging and vote-buying. Adai also pointed to the judiciary’s lack of independence, alleging that it has become an extension of the executive branch, undermining transparency and accountability.
Further addressing Nigeria’s current challenges, Adai expressed concern over the declining economy, rising unemployment, and the widespread corruption that has impacted the nation’s development. He decried the increasing inequality and the failure of the current administration to address basic needs, such as access to education, healthcare, and improved living standards. “The current APC-led government is gradually shifting Nigeria towards an autocratic regime,” Adai warned.
Sowunmi’s movement, “The Alternative,” aims to galvanize the electorate by promoting a comprehensive political review and encouraging citizens to take a stand for better governance in the 2027 elections.
