Steve Harvey Defends Burna Boy, Says African Artists Inspire Western Music

Steve Harvey, the renowned American television host and filmmaker, has voiced his support for Burna Boy and other African artists, refuting claims that they have stolen from American music. In a recent episode of his television show, Harvey asserted that it is actually the West, particularly America, that draws inspiration from African beats, rhythm, and soul.

Harvey’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions about Burna Boy’s musical style and influence. Burna Boy himself clarified in a previous interview with Apple Music that he identifies his music as Afrofusion, a blend of various genres including American hip-hop, R&B, soul, Jamaican reggae and dancehall, along with elements of African music.

Burna Boy’s nomination in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category at the 66th Grammys marked a significant milestone, making him the first African artist to be recognized in a category previously dominated by Western artists. Despite not winning the award, Burna Boy’s nomination sparked discussions in some quarters of the West, with claims that he was attempting to appropriate Western musical styles.
