Stormzy Banned From Driving in the UK for Using Phone While Driving
Popular British rapper Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a mobile phone while behind the wheel of his Rolls-Royce. The ban was handed down by Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court in London on Thursday, following an incident in west Kensington on March 7, 2024.
The case arose when an off-duty police officer spotted the rapper using his phone while driving. Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., pleaded guilty to the offense via a letter submitted to the court.
District Judge Andrew Sweet, who presided over the case, criticized Stormzy’s behavior as “dangerous and irresponsible,” noting that the use of mobile phones while driving poses significant risks to road safety. The judge also remarked on Stormzy’s poor driving record, which included prior offenses.
As a result of the incident, the court added six penalty points to Stormzy’s driving license. Combined with six points already on his record for a previous speeding offence, this brought his total to 12 points. Under UK traffic laws, accumulating 12 or more penalty points within three years results in an automatic driving disqualification.
In addition to the ban, Stormzy was fined £2,010 ($2,498). The fine reflects the seriousness of the offense and serves as a reminder of the legal and financial consequences of distracted driving.
Stormzy’s case highlights the importance of adhering to road safety regulations, particularly the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving. This practice is a leading cause of road accidents and is strictly prohibited under UK law to protect both drivers and pedestrians.
This ruling not only impacts Stormzy’s ability to drive but also serves as a cautionary tale for others about the risks of unsafe driving practices.
