Tinubu Appoints Former NYSC D-G and Others to Combat Social Vices in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

In a bid to address the rampant social vices plaguing Nigerian tertiary institutions, a special committee has been formed under the initiative of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon.

The announcement of the committee’s formation came as a decisive step towards tackling issues such as drug abuse, cultism, cybercrime, sexual harassment, and academic dishonesty, which have been hindering the academic performance and personal development of students nationwide.

According to Asefon, these social vices not only affect academic performance but also pose threats to the overall safety and well-being of students, thereby casting a shadow over the vibrant environment of tertiary institutions.

The newly formed committee, known as the Special Committee for the Eradication of Social Vices in Tertiary Institutions (SESV-TI), comprises various stakeholders, including renowned educationists, student activists, and patriotic leaders.

Maj.- Gen. Suleiman Kazaure (rtd), former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been appointed as the Chairman of the committee, with Maxwell Okoye serving as the Secretary.

The committee’s mandate is to develop and implement comprehensive awareness campaigns, educate students about the dangers of social vices, and promote positive values. Additionally, it will collaborate with tertiary institution administrators to strengthen security measures and implement stricter disciplinary codes.

This initiative reflects a significant commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda and underscores the need for a collaborative approach in tackling social vices in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
