Tinubu Should Have Freed Nnamdi Kanu Says Adeyanju

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu for not releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). According to Adeyanju, Tinubu’s decision to follow the leadership style of former President Muhammadu Buhari is disheartening.

Adeyanju shared his thoughts on the matter through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote, “Tinubu should have released Nnamdi Kanu since. It is easier to criticize than to govern. This is why critics are usually bad leaders, and examples abound all over the world and Africa. If in doubt, look at APC.”

Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, following his controversial arrest in Kenya. Security operatives had extradited him to Nigeria, where he has remained in custody despite growing calls for his release. Many have criticized the government’s handling of his case, citing human rights concerns and political tensions in the region.

Why is Nnamdi Kanu still in detention? This question has been at the forefront of debates surrounding Tinubu’s administration. While some argue that his continued incarceration is necessary for national security, others believe releasing him could foster dialogue and reduce unrest in the Southeast.

Adeyanju’s criticism highlights a broader dissatisfaction among citizens and activists with the government’s approach to governance. Many expected Tinubu to adopt a more reconciliatory stance, especially on sensitive issues like Kanu’s detention.

The debate over Nnamdi Kanu’s release also underscores the challenges of leadership in a politically and ethnically diverse country like Nigeria. Critics argue that addressing such issues requires bold and decisive action, which they feel has been lacking so far.

As the calls for Kanu’s release continue, the spotlight remains on Tinubu’s administration to determine whether it will take a different approach or maintain the status quo.
