Tinubu’s Government to Empower 10 Million Women by 2027

The Federal Government has announced plans to empower 10 million women by 2027 as part of its vision to transform Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy by 2030. This initiative was highlighted during an International Women’s Day event themed “Accelerate Action—Empowering Women Through Financial Literacy & Inclusion.”

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized the need for immediate steps to improve financial literacy and inclusion for women, noting that financial knowledge plays a crucial role in shaping their economic futures. “When women are financially literate, they can control their economic destiny, secure their families, and drive societal change,” she stated.

She pointed out key barriers limiting women’s economic participation, including restricted access to credit, exclusion from formal financial systems, and vulnerability to fraudulent schemes. She called for urgent measures to remove these obstacles.

Highlighting women’s economic contributions, Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that about 40% of small businesses in Nigeria are owned by women, underscoring their significance in economic development.

At the event, the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Emomotimi Agama, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to financial empowerment for women. He stressed the importance of financial education, especially in protecting women from fraudulent schemes and enhancing their economic participation.

“The goal of this administration is to empower women. We must educate them and ensure they take an active role in the capital market,” Agama said. He also commended the Minister of Women Affairs for her dedication to women’s empowerment.

The SEC announced plans to train selected women in capital market activities through the Nigerian Capital Market Institute, reinforcing its commitment to financial literacy initiatives.
