Tyla Clarifies Identity Amidst Social Media Speculation
In a statement shared on her social media platform, Tyla categorically debunked these assertions, affirming her mixed-race heritage. She highlighted her ancestry as encompassing black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian roots, which classify her as “Coloured” within South Africa’s racial context. Outside of her home country, she identifies herself as a black woman.
“Yoh guys, [I have] never denied my blackness, idk where that came from… I’m mixed with black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian and Coloured,” Tyla clarified in her statement.
She further explained the nuanced classification of race across different regions, acknowledging the sensitive implications of the term “Coloured” outside of South Africa. Tyla expressed understanding for those uncomfortable with using the term in contexts beyond her homeland but asserted her dual identity as both a Coloured woman in South Africa and a black woman internationally.
Her statement aimed to put an end to the misunderstanding, emphasizing her pride in her diverse heritage and identity amidst ongoing discussions about race and classification.
